Let me begin by thanking C Y Leung for the opening remarks. The remarks is not only a shot in the arm for this Global Health Summit but also for all who emulate for the best in health care.

Mr Leung as we all know is the vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (or CPPCC in short).  Amongst many of Mr Leung’s attributes, he has been extremely devoted to and passionate in global health driving the Belt and Road initiative and promoting especially public health in under developed nations.  Thank you, C Y!

On behalf of New Frontier, I would like to welcome you all to the Global Health Summit.

This summit is not a scientific meeting, nor is it a clinical meeting.  It is more.  It is a meeting where we gather the minds of all stakeholders: Health Policy makers, academics, scientists, researchers, clinicians, other health care providers, funders e,g. insurance organizations, investors, the industry, and health care users – our patient groups, – together to work out a better health, a better health care policy, a better health care cooperation for all – be it for under developed nations, developing nation, or developed nations.  For sickness and diseases knows no borders.

Let me take this opportunity on Global Health to say a few words on two issue which has been continuously ringing in my mind!

Firstly, the issue of new innovation, from research to bedside and to the public.  Medical science is advancing in breath taking speed.  Many conditions that were considered non treatable are now treatable and/or even curable.

Cancer drugs, new cancer drugs, for example are developing almost every day through the efforts of academics and scientists.  These new drugs are effective, they need to be submitted to clinical trials after which they are then in the hands of pharmaceuticals manufacturer and investors before they reach the public – the patient who need them most.  Yet because of the heavy investment in research and development, they can be very expensive.  In short, effective but not affordable by the required mass, it mean affordable to some but not to the destitute, those who probably need these drugs most.  Let us together put on our thinking cap and come up with a solution!  We are living in ONE WORLD let us all have ONE HOPE!

Let me now turn to international cooperation in Health Care.  Medicine is a science, but the practise of medicine is an art where experience is vital.  Different centres round the world must have different experience and expertise on certain disease conditions.  Better cooperation between centres through knowledge transfer, through tele conference communications or even with patient referrals will give the best for the patients we serve.

United Family Health, a subsidy of the New Frontier Health is actively practising such cooperation.  We are working in close collaboration with different institutions and universities within the Mainland and between Hong Kong, and with institutions in Singapore Mayo and City of Hope in U.S.  It is a bidirectional movement, where patients could be referred to other parts of the world and from overseas patient can come to China for special care.

Ladies, Gentlemen while sickness and disease know no bordering there should also be no borders to give our patients the best of care.  It must be done.

This summit is a chances to bring partnerships of like minds together, Academics, Scientists, Clinicians, health care workers, pharmaceuticals, manufacturers investors and patient groups and advocates, together we can make the world a healthier place.  Thank you.
